Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Although I no longer believe that the Bible is the Word of God, it does have many good stories, such as the story of Creation… which is nothing more than a new version of an old creation myth. Life did start from somewhere, however, and this verse is as good of an explanation as any other, and fits in well with how I now believe.
As one who has sat at the bedside of hundreds of dying people… holding their hands until their final breath is exhaled and their body goes limp, I have witnessed at times, the departure of what can only be described as the Energy of Life. I have both seen and felt this energy and have on at least one occasion, heard it call out my name. I have no doubt that what I saw, felt, and heard was real and not an illusion… but how can that be?
Most people who believe in a God would say that their God is alive, which raises the question, of course, who gave Him Life? To say that He is an eternal being does not answer the question, unless Life is also eternal, in which case both God and Life are One and the same. Therefore when God breathed Life into the nostrils of His creation, it was He who entered into it.
The only difference between a Living being and a dead body is the presence or absence of Life. God is that Energy which is present in all Living things of this Universe and although the various forms that He occupies may at times be cast off and the Universe as we know it may one day no longer exist… it is my belief that Life will continue throughout Eternity. Let us rejoice in this knowledge, for Life is to be LIVED, not worshiped.
